Full Job Description

  • To act as a catalyst for change working directly alongside children, young people, and their families.


  • Typical responsibilities of a role at this level
  • Work directly with children, young people and families using the Suffolk Signs of Safety and Wellbeing framework.

  • Where required by the role, to act as Lead Professional for named families, being the key contact with the family and liaising with other professionals to provide a joined-up response


  • Assessment, Planning and Review
  • Use Suffolk signs of safety principles, disciplines, and tools.

  • Where required, to participate in CAF, multi-agency assessment, Statutory Assessment, and other relevant assessment processes.


  • Effective Practice
  • To work alongside children, young people, parents and families where there are early signs of social, emotional, health or behavioural issues to bring about sustainable improvement.

  • Where required by role, take responsibility for managing cases and holding appropriate levels of risk, overseeing the input of support workers were involved.

  • Work within the service guidelines, statutory guidance, and legal frameworks.

  • To respond to needs identified with the family by identifying and delivering evidence-based interventions as required.

  • To work with families with complex problems where statutory intervention is required under the guidance of senior Social Worker, Lead Professional or Health Colleagues as appropriate.

  • Engage in individual and group supervision with managers and practice leads.

  • Where the role requires, to mentor and/or supervise junior colleagues or students and facilitate individual and group supervision with team members.


  • Reporting and Accurate Recording
  • To maintain up to date records and data using electronic devices and systems as directed and to provide reports as required.

  • To contribute to ensuring successful completion of Quality Assurance processes within team.


  • Information, Advice and Signposting

    · To provide information and signposting for children, young people, and families to relevant universal and specialist services in the local area and beyond where appropriate.

  • Actively build relationships and networks with other professional groups and services in the locality.

  • To identify risk and safeguarding concerns and escalate immediately where appropriate.

  • To undertake other tasks allocated by manager or senior colleagues, in keeping with the responsibilities of the grade:

    The practitioner will:

  • Be responsible for keeping accurate and timely records of work with children, young people and families and writing relevant reports using electronic or other systems as directed.

  • Have access to a line manager for decisions that fall outside their delegated responsibilities.

  • Be required to organise their own workload.

    About the team

    Adoption and Fostering service; Short Term and Therapeutic Fostering Team (STF) - The purpose of the STF team and this social work role is about supporting and supervising foster carers to achieve the best for children in their care, so that they can grow up to be the best that they can be.

    The team supervises fostering households offering short term, emergency, short break, and permanent foster placements supervises and supports fostering households offering short term, emergency, short break, and permanent foster placements ensuring the needs of Children in Care are promoted effectively through their foster carers. We also work in partnership with the Central Resource Service to match and place children needing foster placements, ensuring maximum use of in-house foster care placements. The Short Term team works closely with Suffolk's Therapeutic Fostering Team.

    This social work post will contribute by providing a holistic service to Fostering Families and the children in their care

    What you will be expected to deliver in the role

    In this social work post, you will
  • Work with a specialist team of Social Workers and Practitioners to deliver a high-quality service to Suffolk Foster carers

  • Providing statutory supervision and support to foster carers

  • Facilitate support groups and learning opportunities for foster carers

  • Receive regular reflective supervision and peer group supervision

  • Contribute creative and innovative ideas to improve practice in a well established and supportive team.

  • Work closely with the Therapeutic team to promote trauma informed care and attachment training, alongside our Therapeutic social workers and our Clinicians to support children and carers in their placements.

  • Work in partnership with the Placements team to match and place children needing foster placements and ensuring maximum use of in-house foster care placements.

  • Work alongside childcare professionals to support children in their foster placements with regular communication and attendance at meetings.

  • Undertake annual reviews and all statutory checks on fostering households within expected timescales - (required by Fostering Standards Regulations and guidance)

  • Providing good quality, thorough and analytical recording and reports.

  • Supporting carers to move children on to adoptive families

    Be curious about and able to work within a therapeutic framework, you must be highly self-reflective and able to model this with the foster carers you are working with.

    19. Relevant experience of working directly with children, young people and their families, as relevant to the specific client groups.

    Qualifications and professional memberships

    1. Suitable qualification at graduate level or equivalent experience in a relevant area of work.
