Full Job Description

We are recruiting for a Director of Operations to lead the Operations Department responsible for the effective safe and successful planning, build, delivery and dismantle of the Royal International Air Tattoo (RIAT) Showground and supporting elements. The role reports to the Managing Director and has three direct reports.

Your main responsibilities will include:

  • Lead, mentor and drive Air Operations, Ground Operations process

  • Principal Designer for the Royal International Air Tattoo, assuming associated responsibilities in accordance with Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015.

  • Develop a high-performance culture by championing best practices and professional development.

  • Building a 'one-team' ethos for all levels of the operational functions so there is an expansion of career development, succession planning and opportunities across the teams as well as sharing of skills and best practice.

  • Oversee, lead, and direct the Operations Directorate to ensure all RAFCTE events and specifically RIAT are delivered safely across air, ground, security, and functional safety.

  • Steer and participate as a member of the senior management team, contributing to overall business planning and policy formulation and implementation.

  • Responsible to the CEO for ensuring the RAFCTE Total Safety policy is understood by all Company personnel; foster an environment of open questioning and reporting on all safety matters across RAFCTE activity; ensure all personnel are clear safety is RAFCTE's number one priority.

  • Review, exercise and assure implementation of RIAT operational plans, including the Event Plan, Emergency Plan, Security Plan, and Travel Plan.

  • Responsible to the Accountable Manager (CEO) for all HSE and Military Aviation Authority and Civilian Aviation Authority regulatory compliance and assurance requirements

  • Influence the RIAT Supply Chain to enhance their sustainability to help us achieve our goals and targets.

  • Lead RAFCTE engagement with the RAF RIAT operational delivery team, RAF Fairford RAF Commander, and USAF RAF Fairford 420 Air Base Squadron Commander.

  • Build relationships with internal and external stakeholders

  • Have a 'can do' attitude toward new vision and ideas

    We are seeking a candidate with proven leadership skills within a dynamic and time-sensitive setting. Your background should demonstrate expertise in project and event management, showcasing your ability to handle multiple projects involving diverse stakeholders collaboratively.


  • An established and successful track record of delivering international, large scale and complex events. Tangible examples of experience in the operational planning and delivery of large-scale international events.

    The role involves overseeing a diverse team of experts in security, safety and operational planning and delivery, including air and ground elements. Your success in this position will hinge on excellent interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to work both independently and collaboratively within a team.

    As the Director of Operations for a world-class military air show, experience working with military personnel is beneficial but not required.

The Royal Air Force Charitable Trust Enterprises (RAFCTE) is best known for staging the Royal International Air Tattoo each year at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire. The Royal International Air Tattoo is more than a world-class celebration of aviation, it is also a charitable activity.     Full-time (36.25 hours per week) Monday to Friday.

    Weekend working will also be required from time to time to fulfil responsibilities. Applicants must be able to commit to working several weekends during the build of the Royal International Air Tattoo including the weekends 13th/14th and 20th/21st July.
