Full Job Description

We have excellent flexible opportunities for Field Researchers to work in our Traveller Assessment fieldwork team, with prospects of long-term, continuous work. The role involves travelling to different parts of England and Wales to meet and interview members of the Gypsy and Traveller community, normally working as part of a two-person team.

We are looking for confident people with good communication skills who appreciate cultural sensitivities and can discuss complex issues. They need to be self-motivated, reliable, flexible and able to manage their own time effectively. Experience of market research interviewing or other field-based research would be preferred, but is not essential. Prior experience of engaging with the Gypsy and Traveller community would also be highly advantageous, but again not essential.

Full training will be provided for those individuals who can demonstrate they have the necessary skills, initially accompanying our existing team members in the field before taking on your own projects.

Successful candidates should have:

  • Excellent communication skills and strong organisational skills

  • Good rapport with the general public, both face-to-face and by telephone

  • Self-motivated and confident working independently in the field

  • Good attention to detail

  • Be computer literate and numerate

ORS is a well-established full-service social research agency that undertakes social and market research primarily for the public sector across the UK. We employ around 50 people working out of our large, friendly central Swansea office as well as a number of fieldworkers across England and Wales.

  • Our Needs Assessment team are now very busy with projects booked well into 2025.

The post-holder will work with the team based in the main office, who will allocate the work flexibly week-by-week based on the current projects. Work is normally offered and booked a month in advance.

Weekly work assignments are paid a £525 fixed fee (plus expenses) based on working four consecutive days. Successful candidates must be willing to travel and stay away overnight, with accommodation and a meal allowance provided for each night away.

Each weekly assignment requires 30 hours work in field, plus limited work at home to receive assignments and return completed work. Any extra time worked in field will be paid at £24 per hour, providing that the full assignment meets the expected quality standards and productivity rates.

Travel time from home on the first day and return travel on the last day is additional to the 30 hours work in field, and paid at National Living Wage. Travel costs will be reimbursed, but a full driving license and access to a car or other private transport is essential.

There is a separate holiday pay allowance added to the above rates, which can either be paid in the same week as the work assignment or accrued to be paid later in the holiday year.

Work will normally be subject to a probationary period of up to four weeks, with training provided to help ensure that expected quality standards and productivity rates can routinely be achieved when working independently. During this time, fees will be paid at 70% of the normal rate (£375 per week). IQCS interviewers with at least three years experience would not normally be subject to a probationary period, but references would be required.
