Full Job Description

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Senior Quantity Surveyor to join our team, who will also take on line management responsibility for a team of two Quantity Surveyors. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in ensuring the effective management of costs and contracts throughout the project lifecycle, while also providing leadership and guidance to the Quantity Surveying team. Responsible for looking after design and build, refit schemes and project works across different work streams ranging from short projects around 1 weeks up to larger projects around 6 months. The value of projects will also range from tens of thousands to circa £2million. You will be responsible for everything from the commencement to the completion of projects including measuring, scoping and tendering the works at inception, appointing sub-contractors, managing and reporting the works throughout, dealing with both subcontractors and client payments and their final accounting of all works upon
completion.

Main responsibilities

  • Lead the quantity surveying function for assigned projects, including management of your teams workloads, cost estimation, cost control, and contract management.

  • Attendance and scoping visits / survey meetings as required.

  • All projects to have a detailed cost plan with full handover to project team.

  • Engage in pre-start meetings ensuring a robust programme that aligns with our detailed cost plan

  • Liaison with Client Project Quantity Surveyor/Cost Manager

  • Subcontractor enquiries

  • Subcontractor cost analysis

  • Provide support to Managing Quantity Surveyor

  • Placing Subcontractor orders under agreed contractual terms

  • Provide commercial advice, guidance and support to PM and delivery teams

  • Preparing budget costings, bills of quantities

  • Capable of managing several projects at one time

  • Producing CVR reports, commentary of movements and updating on risks and opportunities

  • Ensuring the project complies to the commercial requirements of the contract entered into

  • Ensure risks are back to back/passed down to sub-contractors

  • Undertake client and sub-contractor valuations

  • Maximise the cash position of the contract and provide cash flow forecasting

  • Prepare and submit final accounts

  • Arranging payments to Subcontractors

  • Track and capture customer variations / challenge sub-contractor final accounts

  • Take part in lessons learnt / post contract reviews providing continual improvement back into the business

  • Provide effective leadership and mentorship to a team of two Quantity Surveyors, fostering a positive and collaborative working environment.

  • Assign tasks and projects to team members, ensuring workload is balanced and deadlines are met.

  • Conduct performance reviews and provide constructive feedback to support the professional development of team members.

  • Act as a point of escalation for any issues or challenges encountered by the Quantity Surveying team, providing guidance and support to resolve them effectively.

  • Mandatory requirement for all roles - to comply with GDPR Principles

    A minimum of 5 years spent in a similar capacity within the construction industry, ideally with a main contractor or fit out contractor.

  • Good sound knowledge of commercial and construction contracts in particular JCT contractual arrangements.

  • Experience of working with schedule of rates and / or frameworks.

  • Preferred background in retail fit-out / construction., Educated to GCSE Standard (or equivalent) including English and Maths.

  • Degree, BTEC or HND/HNC (or equivalent) in Quantity Surveying, Construction Management, Civil Engineering or other construction related studies (preferred).


  • Preferably qualified or working to qualification under Chartered Institute of Building (CIOB) or RICS (Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors).
