Principal Clinical Research Fellow in Sexual Health and HIV

The post holder will develop a programme of research on sexual health with a focus on sexually transmitted infections, including HIV, in women. They will be encouraged to develop collaborations with other research groups in IGH, elsewhere in UCL (including laboratory science groups), and externally. They will contribute to the management of the portfolio of observational and interventional research undertaken at the Centre. They will be encouraged to seek opportunities for international collaboration, including with AHRI in South Africa, on clinical research projects.

The post holder will contribute to the clinical care of patients in the sexual health and HIV service at CNWL. The majority of the clinical work will be in the integrated sexual health (ISH) service and it is expected that the post holder will support a specialist service within the ISH service related to their research interests. The post holder will have some clinical responsibility for outpatient HIV care. The expert clinical advice provided to services in CNWL will include advice on developing services to better meet the needs of the clinic population.

The post holder will contribute to training of junior doctors, including academic trainees who are attached to the service. The post holder will contribute to the development and delivery of the broader educational portfolio of the Institute for Global Health, and to the supervision of postgraduate taught and research students.

The post holder should have a higher academic degree e.g. MD or PhD (or in final stages of preparation), or evidence of an equivalent level of attainment in research publications. They should be on the GMC Specialist Register or be within six months of obtaining a Certificate of Completion of Training (CCT), or equivalent, in an appropriate speciality. They should also have Membership of the Royal College of Physicians and completed General Professional Training, or equivalent.

The post holder should have experience of clinical practice in HIV and sexual health, proven ability to attract grant funding to support research and experience of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.

Proven experience in the design and conduct of research studies and a record of scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals are essential requirements for the post.

We have an exciting opportunity for a Principal Clinical Research Fellow to join our team. The Principal Clinical Research Fellow (PCRF) will be a member of the Centre for Clinical Research in Infection and Sexual Health with an honorary consultant contract at Central and North West London NHS Foundation Trust (CNWL). The post will be based at the Mortimer Market Centre.

The Centre for Clinical Research in Infection and Sexual Health has over 30 staff and postgraduate students. The team includes 7 senior investigators, 6 clinical fellows, 6 research nurses and 5 research assistants, with statistical, project and data management and administrative support. The work of the Centre is focused on trying to reduce the population impact of infectious diseases, and to promote improvements in population health, particularly sexual health, as broadly defined by the World Health Organization. This includes a major focus on the prevention and treatment of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) and blood-borne viruses including hepatitis B and hepatitis C. Our work ranges from studies of pre-exposure prophylaxis for HIV, novel treatments of HIV to treatment and prophylaxis of bacterial STIs. We investigate the full spectrum of interventions from the use of antiviral agents and antibiotics, to vaccines and behavioural interventions, that may improve individual and
population health. The Centre has a portfolio of about 20 studies active at any one time, most recruiting participants from the sexual health and HIV clinics., Our department holds an Athena SWAN Silver award, in recognition of our commitment and demonstrable impact in advancing gender equality.

This is a fixed-term, three-year appointment.

Salary range: £93,666 - £126,281 pro-rata per annum, depending on experience.
