Full Job Description

We are looking for an experienced KS2 teacher to join Howell's Prep School teaching team on a permanent basis. The successful applicant will be required to demonstrate high standards of teaching and pastoral care. Enthusiasm and competence should be evidenced by a lively and engaging teaching style and active participation in the life of the School. The teaching commitment will be a full timetable.

The Prep School is set in its own grounds on the same extensive site as the Senior School. Specialist teaching rooms include a Library, Music, ICT and Art/DT room, with interactive screens or whiteboards in each of the 14 classrooms which are all well-resourced with lively and colourful displays. The girls take full advantage of the facilities in the Senior School also, including the indoor swimming pool, Sports Pavilion & Astroturf, instrumental music teaching rooms and the Great Hall. PE and Music lessons across the age range are taken by subject specialists, and girls in Key Stage 2 benefit further by having lessons in French, Spanish and Welsh delivered by teachers from the Senior School.

Howell's Prep School is a caring, family community. The girls are happy and motivated, have a real love of learning and are well supported by their parents. Our committed staff work closely and positively as a team to ensure that our warm, friendly environment is maintained and that all girls have an enriched and holistic experience.

About the School

Howell's School, Llandaff, is one of the oldest girls' school in Wales, having opened in August 1860. Since then, it has steadily expanded, both in terms of student numbers and physical size. The school now caters for girls from the age of 3 to 16 and girls and boys 16-18. Since 1980 it has been a member of the Girls' Day School Trust, the largest organisation of independent schools in the UK. Its 25 member schools all have a reputation for consistently high academic standards, superb pastoral support and enviable extra-curricular programmes.

In February 2024 Howell's received an exceptional report from Estyn which recognised many of the outstanding features of our school. Inspectors found Howell's to be "an extremely happy school community built upon a culture of kindness and the humble pursuit of excellence. Collectively, senior leaders, governors and staff have fostered an environment which values learning, opportunity and growth". The full report can be accessed through the Howell's website.

The facilities inside the Victorian building and its more modern extensions are first-class and the opportunities for extracurricular activities, teamwork and confidence-building numerous. Academically, the school provides great added value, with results at both GCSE and A Level regularly greatly exceeding expectations.

As part of the GDST, the UK's leading network of independent girls' schools, we can offer a variety of benefits, such as:

  • Competitive salaries and pay progression

  • A commitment to CPD, with access to extensive professional development opportunities

  • A generous independent flexible pension scheme

  • A free lunch during term time

  • Free life assurance benefit

  • A discount of up to 50% on fees for children at GDST schools

  • Interest free loans for training, computer purchases and travel season tickets

  • A Cycle to Work scheme

  • Competitive terms and conditions of employment, including a shorter academic year than the maintained sector
