Full Job Description

This fixed-term (11 months, or part-time equivalent) position will play a key role in the AHRC/DFG funded 'Ritual, rubbish and retrieval in Roman rivers' project. You will have a PhD in Archaeology (or equivalent professional experience) and you will work with Professor Hella Eckardt (University of Reading) and Dr Philippa Walton (University of Leicester) to accomplish a range of tasks essential to the completion of a monograph. This will include querying HER and PAS records for Romano-British river finds and a literature search for published sources discussing river finds and bridge structures, particularly with regards to ten case studies on which the project will focus. The role will involve populating an existing Access database, create mapping of these data using a GIS and assisting in the writing of the synthetic analyses.

You will have experience of:

  • Accessing and querying HER and PAS datasets, identifying their strengths and weaknesses;

  • Populating Access (or equivalent) databases

  • Managing large datasets using a GIS to produce high quality distribution maps and plans;

  • Digitising and standardising plans ready for publication and for deposition in the online, open-access archive.

  • Carrying out independent research on a topic and contributing to the writing of book chapters or journal papers.

  • The archaeology of Roman Britain, ideally with a finds specialism

  • Attending relevant seminars, conferences, exhibitions and other events to disseminate research results.
