Full Job Description

We now have an opportunity for a Mechanical Beamline Technician/Senior Mechanical Beamline Technician to support the scientists and technical support groups associated with the beamline during beamline maintenance, commissioning, and operations. The technician will help maintain the equipment already existing on the beamline and will work with the beamline scientists and engineers in designing and installing new beamline equipment as part of upgrades. He/she will also help users to carry out experiments, machining small pieces of equipment such as sample holders, and integrating ancillary equipment into the experimental areas. The post holder will need to ensure that all beamline work is carried out in a safe manner, and that the equipment is appropriately integrated and installed. The technician will work also with other staff from the four beamlines of the Crystallography group to support their operations.

Beamline I19 at Diamond, is a facility tailored for small-molecule single-crystal diffraction. Our beamline utilises an intense X-ray beam (5-30 keV) to delve into the intricate structural properties of a range of materials of relevance to pure and applied chemistry, as well as industry, and pharmaceutical compounds.

Ideally you will hold a ONC or GNVQ level 2 qualification although applicants with equivalent work experience will also be considered.

You should have proven experience in at least one of the following areas: cryogenics, precision mechanics, ultra-high vacuum and high-vacuum, specialist gases, cooling water. As well as familiarity with using quality assurance procedures, work planning and safe systems of work, including risk assessments, permit to work, written SOPs etc.

For the Senior position you will also have experience:

· With chilled water, compressed air, domestic water.

· Of using cranes and slings etc. for heavy lifting.

£29,778 to £31,679 (Discretionary range to £36,430), or £37,087 to £40,754 (Discretionary range to £46,868) for the Senior Level, dependent upon skills and experience

Harwell Science and Innovation Campus, Oxfordshire -based onsite.
