Full Job Description

Working for the Operations Manager you will be supported to learn about, and lead on, both the Company's Environmental Management System and Health and Safety Management System (SHE) and provide support to other production related areas such as factory improvements / efficiencies. This is a Development Role within a factory operations environment and the long-term aim of the Degree Apprenticeship is to support the Apprentice to achieve the learning outcomes within their degree, whilst also learning about, and maintaining, our SHE legal compliance of the business and it's two UK production facilities and provide support where required for production / operational issues as required. Once fully qualified and all modules successfully achieved, you can apply for a permanent role within BWE., As an Engineering Degree Apprentice at Blackwood Engineering you will be developing your knowledge and experience over the duration of your training programme - particularly in a more technical support capacity. Over time you will learn and be responsible for, supporting the business operations in the following areas:

1. Effective Health, Safety and Environmental compliance

  • Reviewing, understanding and implementing legislation which is applicable to our business

  • Maintaining legislation register for applicable legislation to BWE

  • Implementing and maintaining environmental or health and safety policies / procedures / handbooks, ensuring compliance

  • Advise and guide all Heads of Department and other personnel to ensure compliance with the companies SHE policies and procedures

  • Conducting audits as and when required

  • Constantly seeking areas for improvement and development in SHE performance

  • Building up a good rapport with the workforce based on trust and co-operation

  • Carrying out safety inspections as and when required ·

  • Making a positive contribution to improving health and safety standards ·

  • Working closely with the operational management team on SHE ·

  • Investigating accidents, incidents and near misses ·

  • Reviewing health & safety documentation


  • 2. Production Support
  • Providing support to the operations team on factory improvements / layout

  • Support and lead continuous improvement, problem solving and process improvement activities, as required

  • Supporting the development and implementation of operations related QMS procedures

    As an undergraduate degree apprentice you will join us on a full-time, fixed term training employment contract for the duration of your BSc Degree in Engineering Management which will be 100% funded. This means you will have no student loans to pay off once you graduate in 4 years time PLUS you will gain the opportunity to earn a salary whilst you are working and studying towards your degree in engineering., 5 GCSEs (A-C) and


  • 2 A-levels including Maths & Science, or

    BTEC Engineering Diploma or relevant engineering subject.

    Work experience or hobbies demonstrating an interest in engineering

    Good attention to detail

    Ability to communicate well in English (written and spoken)

    Able to work well in a team or work independently

    Must successfully enrol with the University of Wales Trinity St David's Engineering Degree Apprenticeship programme in Engineering Management to gain a university place for September 2024.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION

    All applicants must have the right to live and work in the UK for the duration of the Undergraduate degree apprenticeship. This position is not eligible for Visa Sponsorship.

    Applicants must hold a clean, full UK drivers' licence as you will need to commute to university one day a week and also commute to our production sites

    This position is subject to successful achievement of academic grades and successful enrolment with the university and course identified above.
