Full Job Description

We are currently looking for an enthusiastic, forward thinking, Biomedical Scientist to join the Department of Microbiology.

HCPC registration is an essential requirement.

Our modern and well-equipped department processes approximately 500,000 specimens per annum providing a comprehensive clinical microbiology service. The department performs tests on several different platforms, such as BACTEC FX, Enteric-Bio, Phoenix M50 & Phoenix AP, Autoplak, BD MGIT, Bruker Sirius MALDI-TOF, COBAS U701, Uri-MAST, COBAS 6800, COBAS 8000, VERIGENE Nanosphere, HOLOGIC Panther, and VirClia Lotus., You will be expected to work in all aspects of general microbiology diagnostic testing including microscopy, plate reading, antibiotic susceptibility testing, CL3 work, molecular microbiology, mycology, and serology.

The successful applicant will support teaching and development of all staff groups in the department, as well as participate in all aspects of quality management to assist UKAS accreditation.

You will be expected to be an integral part of the team to ensure the provision of a high-quality professional service.

You will also assist with delivery of training, competency assessments, participate in audits and assist in the supervision of more junior staff.

You will be expected to work flexibly providing a service, including weekends and public holidays on a rotational basis and participate in the out of hour's on-call service, as required. The post is full time working 8am to 8pm (37.5 hours) over a 7-day week.

The ideal candidate would have a wide experience of all aspects of general medical microbiology diagnostic testing and have excellent interpersonal skills.

The successful candidate will have excellent interpersonal skills, a positive attitude, and the desire to provide a service of the highest quality.

The candidate will have had previous experience working in a clinical laboratory and will be expected to work towards and complete the IBMS Microbiology Specialist Portfolio, be a team player.
